The pen is mightier than the paintbrush.

I've always been a writer. My mum still proudly hangs on to my creative writing jotters from primary school – they're a great source of entertainment, especially at Christmas. My spelling was awful, but I had a gifted imagination. An imagination that took me to art school and then into advertising (where my spelling improved if anything).

Mum is my biggest fan – she's still got every school jotter I wrote (yes, my real name is Marvyn).  And a few of my paintings still take pride of place in her house – they're better than what I could do now.

This seems as good a place as any to say how much I miss my fellow Art Director, Mark Graham, who sadly passed away a couple of years ago, Creative Director of Clayton Graham Communications. He was the sharpest, bravest, ballsiest and most creative man I have ever and probably will ever meet. RIP Mr G.

Finally, I'd like to credit Glasgow Design Agency, Front Page, for quite literally opening my eyes to the world -  while working with clients such as Air New Zealand, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

Professional Copywriter in Glasgow and Edinburgh

I've been writing, predominantly in-house (ad and design agencies), for the last 15+ years.

Abbott Mead Vickers would discern whether I was to become a creative or a suit (account exec). And as a wannabe creative, I was torn between copywriting and art direction. It was an easy decision in the end. Thanks to my Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator skills (or rather, lack of them), I chose the copywriting route, and there was no agency better suited to sharpen my skills than Clayton Graham. I was (and still am) a copywriter with an ambidextrous brain – a writer who also likes to come up with the big idea(s), as well as the words.

At this point, I'm going to steer clear of the inevitable copywriter spiel –

Choose me because my beautifully crafted copy gets results blah de blah de blah.”

There are way too many charlatans out there.

Testimonials

“I had some important publicity that I was drafting and redrafting but struggling to get right. I searched for a copywriter in Scotland and Jim came up and I have not looked back. Jim transformed the copy, so the pages now speak and our central message is powerful and punchy, written in plain English. Jim took the time to understand our business and devoted himself, day and night, to getting our message written perfectly in all respects. It's a rare gift he's got and he is also a very nice bloke. If only I had found Jim years ago: he is a diamond and will be our ‘go to' man in the future. So, if you are needing a copywriter, contact Jim, as he is the very best and his rates are reasonable too.”

Munro McCannell (A leading Scottish Solicitor and MD of Scotia Law Training Ltd)

“Jim is not only a very cool dude, but also a highly talented creative. Passionate about his craft, he's meticulous on detail and big on ideas. Hire him for your next project and you won't be disappointed.”

Martin Cross (Freelance Copywriter)

“Jim cares about his work and has written for stellar clients. His thinking has clarity, his approach is creative and he is a great listener. With 15-years-experience, he can work wonders across a variety of different mediums and platforms – able to meet tight deadlines, and with his sense of humour still intact. And he can art direct too, which means there is much more to Jim than your average copywriter – especially nowadays.”

Juliette Forrest (Children's Author, ex Copywriter & Art Director)

“As a designer I really value Jim's ideas and energy not only for his own craft but his consideration of how it works visually and strategically. A great asset to any team”.

Lisa Adamson (Creative Director, Designer & Co-founder of Ilka)

“I had the pleasure at Levy McCallum to employ this young man as a senior copywriter working alongside the late and great Mark Graham. Jim was an outstanding individual totally dedicated in proving outstanding copy matter to our existing client base and just importantly working closely with me on the new business team which had many outstanding results. This is a person who would be a credit to any advertising marketing or digital company...employ him TODAY!”

Alan S Levy (Ex boss and legendary adman)

“Jim was a colleague for almost ten years so I can testify to his consistent levels of inspired creativity. As is the case with many writers, Jim takes a holistic approach to his work –  creating, developing then taking a concept to an absolute conclusion. Jim's experience embraces a wide variety of B2C and B2B sectors including financial, leisure, FMEG, automotive and retail and he has deep knowledge and familiarity across television, radio, press, digital. Creativity apart, Jim is comfortable working to deadlines, diligent and can always be relied upon to deliver great work time after time, on time.”

Alasdair Gibbons (Ex Account Executive – the best I've ever worked with)

“Jim is the kind of writer you want in your team. Having worked with him at two of Glasgow's most dynamic agencies, I've watched him turn convoluted briefs into hard-hitting copy that converts. Jim excels in a busy, deadline-driven environment and throws himself into tasks with reckless abandon (in a good way!). Time and again, he impressed me with his out-of-the-box solutions, creative energy and idiosyncratic outlook. Top guy, top writer.”
